This volume is a collection of lectures given at a Summer School in Budapest 1971. The participants of the School express their thanks to the Bolyai Janos Mathematical Society for the organization of the conference and to the Hungarian Academy of Sciences for their assistance.
The reader will observe a strengthening connection between group representations and number theory in the titles already. The connections with quantum mechanics, field theory, harmonic analysis and number theory, and the role of deep ideas common with algebraic and differential topology as well as algebraic geometry, make representation theory an important part of mathematics. Some of these connections are reflected in the lectures of the School. Besides the scientific reports presented in this volume a series of introductory lectures has been held. Since the readers of the two parts may not be the same, the introductory lectures will be published in a separate volume together with the special lectures held by Professor G. W. Mackey for physicists.
