Description

The "Institut de Robòtica i Informàtica Industrial (IRI), CSIC-UPC", a joint research centre of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) and the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC), is seeking a PhD student to work under the framework of the European Project CLOTHILDE (ERC Advanced Grant 2016), awarded to Dr. Carme Torras .

The PhD student is expected to complete a doctoral thesis in Computational Topology, within the Applied Mathematics UPC Doctoral Programme. The PhD thesis will be supervised by Dr. Maria Alberich and Dr. Jaume Amorós (Department of Mathematics, UPC). In addition, the PhD student will be incorporated into the Perception and Manipulation Group of IRI.


The subject of the thesis will be focused on the development of algorithms for the effective calculation of Algebraic Topology invariants, and their application for the representation of topological characteristics of clothing that are relevant to its robotic manipulation.

The contract will be of one year (with possible extension for up to 4 years).

Requirements

Qualifications: The candidate is expected to have a bachelor in mathematics, industrial engineering, computer science or a related field.

Ideally, it is expected to receive applications from candidates who have completed or are studying a master's degree. In any case, applications for students in the last year of the degree of Mathematics ready to do their TFG in this subject are also welcome. In this second case, the start of the scholarship will be delayed until the chosen person meets the legal requirements for their recruitment (which consists in having completed a minimum of credits of the master's degree).
Languages: Fluent in English.
